Few of us actually manage to maintain our oral health as well as we would like, or perhaps should. There’s always so much to do in our lives that we often miss the little details. A recent study found that nearly half of all adults don’t manage to regularly brush two times a day. We thought it would be worthwhile looking at the essential parts of oral hygiene – and what you should be doing to keep your oral health.

Brushing

Twice a day for two minutes is the bare minimum oral health routine we have to have. It can take months to build the habit but really this should never be avoided. Missing even a couple of two minute sessions can start a cavity or plaque build-up that will eventually lead to gingivitis and other oral health problems.

Brushing technique is equally important as well. Many of us actually brush our teeth in the wrong way. The best technique is to go gently and make sure that you cover all of your teeth thoroughly. Start in a different location every time you brush so that you always cover areas thoroughly.

Flossing

Even the best brushing routine will miss parts of your teeth and gums. Flossing helps remove plaque and food from between your teeth and is the most important part of your dental routine for stopping you from having bad breath and developing gingivitis. Flossing at least once a day is essential.

Mouth Wash

Mouth wash, like flossing, helps you get to the places that brushing often can’t reach. Make sure it contains fluoride as this is your first line of defence against decay. Mouth wash can be used once or twice a day in addition to brushing.

Dietary Changes

One of the most common reasons oral health issues arise is a poor diet. The pervasiveness of sugar is horrifying in food and drinks. Cutting back on sugary drinks is one of the best ways to avoid cavities forming in your teeth. Try to limit sugary drinks to meal times and special occasions. Chewing sugar-free gum also helps remove plaque from your teeth between meals and is worth keeping on hand.

Visiting A Dentist

Even with a perfect dental routine problems can still arise. Visiting the dentist twice a year for check-ups is the best way to get on top of any problems. Regular check-ups can help identify cavities and other problems early enough that treatment can either be minor or avoided. As check-ups are quick and relatively inexpensive this shouldn’t be avoided.

These simple techniques will only take up 5-10 minutes of every day. However, forgetting to do these steps can lead to serious oral health problems. It will probably take several months for this to become second nature but once you have you should avoid almost all of the most common dental

  1. Thanks for this blog! Others thought that brushing twice a day is enough to maintain oral health. Because of busy schedules at work, others don’t manage to regularly brush two times a day. Visiting a dentist is one of the best dental routines that you must to do twice a year.

    Interesting blog! I brush my teeth twice a day and floss my teeth once in a week. And I visit my family dentistry once in six months.
